ILR to Citizenship Timeline
Step 1: Obtain Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Step 2: Wait 12 months (in UK or working abroad for UK employer). Step 3: Apply for citizenship. Step 4: Processing (typically 4-6 months). Step 5: Ceremony and certificate. Total minimum: 1 year processing after ILR.
Residency Counting
Only continuous ILR counts. If you leave the UK for more than 2 years, you lose ILR and the clock resets. Working abroad for UK employer is usually fine. Breaks of 6+ months in UK may require re-entry clearance.
Application Processing
Standard: 4-6 months from application to decision. Premium service (extra fee): 2-6 weeks. Complex cases: 8-12 months. Delays happen if: background check issues, security concerns, incomplete application.
After Approval
You're invited to citizenship ceremony. Attend in person (required). Take the pledge. Receive citizenship certificate. This is legally binding—you're officially British. Can then apply for British passport.
